Nigerian shines as Lukaku opens Man United account

Former Super Eagles midfielder, Sunday Stephen put in a good shift for Salt Lake City in their preseason match against Manchester United and new Red Devils star, Romelu Lukaku got off the mark during that encounter.

Stephen, who represented Spain at U19, U20 and U21 levels, before switching allegiance to Nigeria, played for his MLS team for 30minutes and the whole eleven were substituted with the score at 1-1.

Salt Lake City grabbed the first goal as Luis Silva latched on to a through-ball and prods home but the Red Devils hit back after a fine team effort that involved Romelu Lukaku, Jesse Lingard and Henrikh Mkhitaryan and the Armenian controlled the ball on the edge of the area before finishing with his left foot.

Unlike the game against LA Galaxy which United won 5-2, City provided a better opposition and troubled Jose Mourinho’s side but Lukaku ensured they went into the half-time break with the lead when he received the ball from Mkhitaryan and sold a dummy to the goalkeeper and two defenders before placing the ball into the net for his first Manchester United goal in his first start since he joined for £75m from Everton this summer.

At the start of the second half, United changed the whole team with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial coming in to lead the attack and Sergio Romero replacing Joel Peirera in goal for his first preseason game.

Juan Mata went off after 14 minutes as he got a minor knock from a challenge but it turned a little ugly for the away side as Antonio Valencia was sent off for a bad challenge on Sebastian Saucedo.

Martial had the opportunity of making it three but wasted the chance after he had done the hardwork of beating a defender on the edge of the box. The game ended 2-1 in favour of 10-man Manchester United and they will now focus on forthcoming games against Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona.
