Sunderland Join Middlesbrough In Jonny Howson Hunt As Leeds Return Ruled Out

Sunderland have joined Middlesbrough in the race for Norwich City midfielder Jonny Howson, but a potential return to Leeds United for the 29-year-old has been played down.

Leeds have been continually linked with a swoop for their former player this summer, with hopes amongst the club faithful that Howson will return to Elland Road.

However, former Whites boss Garry Monk has also put Middlesbrough in the mix for Howson, who Norwich are prepared to sell for the right price this summer.

Boro have been joined by Sunderland in the hunt for Howson though, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, with it also being claimed that the midfielder will not be joining the Whites.

The news will be a disappointment for Leeds fans, especially as Howson is likely to now strengthen Championship promotion rivals.

Howson played under new Sunderland manager Simon Grayson during his time at Leeds and a reunion could be on the cards.

The 29-year-old, who skippered the Whites, was sold to Norwich in 2012.

Howson enjoyed several seasons of Premier League football with the Canaries, who he helped to a quick return to the top flight in 2015, before the club dropped back down again.
